Jumbo Hostel, Arlanda, Sweden

Jumbo Hostel, Arlanda, Sweden

A unique hostel built inside a decommissioned Boeing 747 jet within a walking distance from Stockhom's Arlanda international airport.

From wikipedia...

"The hotel is located inside a decommissioned 747-200 jetliner built in 1976, which was last operated by Transjet, a Swedish airline that went bankrupt in 2002. It was originally built for Singapore Airlines and later served with Pan Am.

In December 2007, Sigtuna authorities granted a building permit for establishing Jumbo Hostel at the entrance to Arlanda airport. In January 2008, the aircraft was moved to a construction parking site where the first phase of the conversion began with the dismantling of the old interior, new paint and new decorations for the rooms. 450 seats were taken out and the plane was sanitized completely. The hostel was built like any house, subjected to the same demands on climate control and isolation, adhering to all common energy standards. Heating is achieved with an air-air inverter.

Tail of the Jumbohostel
During the summer of 2008, the plane was towed to its final destination at the entrance to Stockholm-Arlanda Airport where it was placed on a concrete foundation with the landing gear secured in two steel cradles. The hostel opened late December 2008."

Trump Tower

Trump Tower

The Trump International Hotel and Tower, also known as Trump Tower Chicago and locally as the Trump Tower, is a skyscraper condo-hotel in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The building, named after real estate developer Donald Trump, was designed by architect Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Bovis Lend Lease built the 92-story structure, which reached a height of 1,389 feet (423 m) including its spire, its roof topping out at 1,170 feet (360 m). It is adjacent to the main branch of the Chicago River, with a view of the entry to Lake Michigan beyond a series of bridges over the river. The building received publicity when the winner of the first season of The Apprentice television show, Bill Rancic, chose to manage the construction of the tower.

Trump announced in 2001 that the skyscraper would become the tallest building in the world, but after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the building plans were scaled back, and its design has undergone several revisions. When topped out in 2009 it became the second-tallest building in the United States after Chicago's Willis Tower. It is expected to be surpassed by the One World Trade Center in New York City in the middle of 2013, and by the on-hold Chicago Spire if completed. Trump Tower surpassed Chicago's John Hancock Center as the building with the world's highest residence above ground-level and held this title until the completion of the Burj Khalifa. It is currently the tenth tallest building in the world.

The design of the building includes, from the ground up, retail space, a parking garage, a hotel, and condominiums. The 339-room hotel opened for business with limited accommodations and services on January 30, 2008. April 28 of that year marked the grand opening with full accommodation and services. A restaurant on the 16th floor, named Sixteen, opened in early 2008 to favorable reviews. The building topped out in late 2008 and construction was completed in 2009. The hotel is one of four four- or five-star-rated hotels in Chicago, and the building hosts a restaurant that is one of nine restaurants in the city with either a four- or five-star rating, according to the Forbes Travel Guide (formerly Mobil Travel Guide). What happened in Room 545?

What happened in Room 545?

This is the haunted room in The Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC.
"As the tale goes, the ghost is that of a young woman dressed in pink who fell to her death in the Palm Court Atrium around 1920." She has been seen by many hotel employees.
To get this picture, I had to travel to the 5th floor in a small elevator built into the rocks that make the hotel. The elevator operator took us to the 5th floor. I had my 14 month old son on my back in his carrier. I saw the door as soon as I got off the elevator and got my camera up to shot. As soon as I paused at the door, my son starts screaming as loud as he can. I quickly try and take the picture, but the screen reads "CF card is full". NO WAY!! There was only about 35 pics on this card!! I quickly delete a couple of pics and am able to snap a quick shot. I get my son off my back and get back on the elevator. I tell the operator, "I guess he doesn't like the 5th floor." He replied, "Well, it is haunted, you know. It strange, though. The Pink Lady supposedly likes kids."
Weird.
My son calmed down as soon as we returned to the main floor.
Really weird.

WWII's Tuskegee Airmen Invited to Inauguration
Date: Thursday, December 11, 2008, 2:22 pm
By: Nafeesa Sayeed, Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The Tuskegee Airmen, who made history during World War II as the country's first black military pilots only to return home to discrimination and exclusion from victory parades, have been invited to Barack Obama's inauguration.

"I want to come hopping, skipping and jumping!" said 92-year-old Spann Watson, an airman from Westbury, N.Y. who flew above Pennsylvania Avenue for President Truman's inauguration. "We had a part in changing these United States."

John L. Harrison Jr. an original airman now in his 80s, also said he plans to attend Barack Obama's inauguration.

"It makes us very very proud," said Harrison, of Philadelphia. "And it sort of compensates for a lot of the things that we had to endure in the early days."

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., sent the invitation Tuesday to Tuskegee Airmen Inc. The Arlington, Va.-based organization represents 330 of the original pilots, whose ranks were once about 1,000.

"We believe that it is appropriate to honor these members of the greatest generation who overcame enormous racial barriers to serve their nation," Feinstein said in a statement.

The Tuskegee Airmen were recruited into an Army Air Corps program that trained blacks to fly and maintain combat aircraft. They trained as a segregated unit at an air base in Tuskegee, Ala.

After fighting the Nazis, they returned home to face discrimination. Watson, the New York airman, said blacks weren't allowed to participate in victory parades with other troops returning from Europe during World War II.

"We were excluded out of everything and hidden from everything," he said. "Now this time is our time, and to have a black man as the elected president, this is indeed a turn in history."

Each member will receive two tickets to the Jan. 20 inauguration, and they have 10 days to decide if they will attend.

Carole Florman, a spokeswoman for the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, said the airmen's seating assignment has not been decided, but it will be within the ticketed viewing area around the U.S. Capitol.

Robert Rose, first vice president of Tuskegee Airmen, said he believes the last time the airmen were officially invited to an inauguration as a group was for Truman's swearing-in 1949.

Rose, speaking from his home in Bellevue, Neb., said his local chapters are contacting airmen. Most are in their late 80s and early 90s, making travel difficult. The logistics involved, such as finding increasingly expensive and scarce hotel rooms, also may prevent some from showing up.

Pattaya is a city in Thailand, located on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand, about 125 km south of Bangkok, located within, but not part of Amphoe Bang Lamung ( Banglamung ) in the province of Chonburi.
The city of Pattaya is a self governing municipal area which covers the whole tambon Nong Prue (Nongprue) and Na Kluea (Naklua) and parts of Huai Yai and Nong Pla Lai. It is located in the heavily industrial Eastern Seaboard zone, along with Si Racha (Sri Racha), Laem Chabang, and Chon Buri ( Chonburi ).
The city of Pattaya has a population exceeding 100,000 (2007). Pattaya is also the centre of the Pattaya-Chonburi Metropolitan Area, the conurbation in Chonburi Province, with a total population exceeding 1,000,000 (2010).
The name Pattaya evolved from the march of Phraya Tak ( later King Taksin ) and his army from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi, which took place before the fall of the former capital to the Burmese invaders in 1767.
When his army arrived at the vicinity of what is now Pattaya, Phraya Tak encountered the troops of Nai Klom, who tried to intercept him. When the two leaders met face to face, Nai Klom was awed by Phraya Tak's dignified manner and his army's strict discipline. He then surrendered without a fight. The place the two armies confronted one another was called Thap Phraya, which means the Army of the Phraya. This was later changed to Phatthaya, which means the wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast at the beginning of the rainy season. Today the city is officially known as Pattaya.
For centuries, Pattaya was a small fishing village. But a change occurred on April 26, 1961, when the first group of about 100 American servicemen who were fighting in the Vietnam War arrived in Pattaya for relaxation. From this beginning, Pattaya became a popular beach resort which now attracts over 4 million visitors a year. Fishermen's huts along the beach were replaced by resort hotels and retail stores, including Asia's largest beachfront shopping mall, the Central Festival Pattaya Beach Mall.
The city (Mueang) had 104,318 registered inhabitants in 2007. As with the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, that figure excludes the large number of people who work in the city but remain registered in their hometowns, and many long-term expatriate visitors. Including non-registered residents, the population numbers around 300,000 at any given time. Other estimates put the figure as high as 500,000.
Most of the officially-registered Pattaya residents are of Thai-Chinese ancestry. Due to the tourist industry, many people from the Northeast (known as Issan, the poorest region of Thailand) have come to work in Pattaya, and are counted for census purposes in their hometown.
There is a fast-growing community of foreign retirees living in Pattaya. Thai immigration has a special visa category for foreigners over age 50 who wish to retire in Thailand. Pattaya is attractive to many retirees from Europe and other Western countries not only because of its climate and exotic, easy lifestyle, but also because living costs are a fraction of those in Europe, a major consideration for people on fixed pensions or incomes.

Dinner in Portsmouth

Dinner in Portsmouth

The building that houses the Rosa restaurant was built in 1815 following the third and most severe of the three great Portsmouth fires. The first one, on December 26th, 1802 devastated the Market Square area. The second, on December 24th, 1806 began on Bow Street and went up Market Street towards the square. And the third, on December 22nd, 1813 destroyed 300 buildings along State Street from the Unitarian Church all the way down to the river. Following the third fire, the city enacted the "brick laws" forbidding the building of tall wooden structures in the downtown area. The Rosa building was built during the reconstruction of the State Street area.

In the early 1900's, the building was the childhood home of Ralph Rosa. Ralph had worked as a cook for several area restaurants throughout high school and into his twenties before finding a job at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. However, after losing that job due to layoffs in 1926, his mother suggested opening an Italian restaurant out of her home using her family recipes. So, with the help of his mother, an Italian chef, and a small wait staff, Ralph Rosa opened The Rosa Restaurant on December 22nd, 1927.

The early years were a struggle, and The Rosa actually had to close for a couple of months during the height of the Great Depression, but the end of prohibition brought better days to the restaurant (The Rosa being the first restaurant in New Hampshire to obtain a liquor license after prohibition). Ralph Rosa opened a lounge next door called The Forrest Club in the 1940's which evolved in to the Cara Mia Lounge in the early 1960's while the restaurant had quickly become a local favorite for Italian-American fare.

The restaurant was purchased from the Rosa family by Ralph's long-time friend and customer Joe Hunt in 1981. Since that time Joe and his wife Pamela have done several renovations to the building, added two more dining areas upstairs, purchased a private parking lot directly across the street, and expanded upon the menu to include several steak and seafood options on top of the traditional Italian fare of parmigiana, pizza, veal, and pasta.

The Rosa neighborhood has also seen its fair share of changes in recent years. The South end of Portsmouth has been transformed from a residential working class neighborhood to more of an extension of the downtown district with several shops, galleries, restaurants, museums, and theaters. The old homes in the "Puddle Dock" neighborhood directly behind The Rosa are now a part of The Strawberry Banke Museum, and the old warehouses along the river across from The Rosa which used to be home to many area merchants and were a part of Portsmouth's great history as one of the most active seaports in the area are now home to several computer companies, real estate agencies, inns, and the Seacoast Repertory Theater.
